New Year
I know it's been a while since I last updated. I finished yet another semester on my never ending quest to be done withh school. I got the grades I wanted which is good. I took the dreaded OAT. I took it 2 days before Christmas. I think I did pretty good on it especially considering the fact that I only really studied for like 4 days. I have now applied to a few of the schools I was looking at. I will let everyone know when I hear anything. A new semester has started and my classes are going to be tough. This will be a very short post because I have to get uup early tomorrow. Actually this is it. Have a great week!

CAR
So for those of you who have been living under a rock for the past few weeks and haven't heard what happened, here it is.

I wrecked my car on a school trip to Grundy Virginia. Everyone in the car was fine. However the car was not. I crashed into a guard rail going around a tight mountain turn. Luckily I hit straight on otherwise it could have been much worse. This all happened on October 3rd. On Oct 22nd was when the insurance company finally got back to me about the decision of whether or not they would fix it. They decided to total it. Lucky for me they are paying off my entire loan of 10,500. So that leaves me without a car payment for the time being. And without a car.
I was searching on line and talking to people I know about finding a junker car that will just last me the rest of my time here in VA. I went to a couple of places to look at less expensive cars. I didn't have good feelings about any of them. Yeah I may only spend 2000 on a car but what am I going to spend in repair costs and time without a car in the next year or 2. So I figured it would be too much of a hassle. So here is what I bought.

It is a 2003 Honda Civic EX. Yes my old car was a 2003 Honda Civic as well. I figured I might as well stick to what I am comfortable with. No thats not the reason I bought it. I got a great deal on it.

The car payment I had before was 320 a month and I think I had about another 3 yrs left on it. The new car payment I have is 200 bucks a month for 4 years. So I have a reliable car and a lower payment then before and peace of mind.
So all of you who might want to lecture me on making this hasty decision or what some of you may say a stupid decision, I don't want to hear it. I think I made a good decision for me and it is done. So no lectures or snippy coments. Thank you.

Summer, Trip, School, Life
Well school has started yet again. I will get into that later, first I should tell you hjow my summer went. It was a lot of fun. I finished spanish YIPPEE!!! I am done finito. Once that was finished I decided to take a break from all things scholarly and just relax for a little while. So I figured that I should go to Utah and have some fun out there. For those of you all who know the story just bare with me.
Well we went to Lava Hot Springs in Idaho for a few days. It was a blast. Day one was spent getting settled into the cabin and going to the pool. They have some fun waterslides and a huge outdoor swimming pool. The weather was great. I even was brave enough to go off the diving board. (The low one of course. I'm not that stupid.) I even got out my snorkel and mask yes I probably looked like a dork but I had fun doing it so that is all that matters.
The next day we got the tubes ready to go down the little river they have going through the town. The first trip down I did great! Didn't fall off once. Was so proud of myself. It went downhill from there though. I fell off I think at least twice in the rest of my travels down the river. Got all cut up and bruised and sunburned. I even lost my hat on one of my wipeouts. I saw it float down the river and I couldn't catch up to it. I thought it was lost for good. But as I was going down I saw a red thing stuck to a rock underwater so I reached for it. It was my hat! I couldn't believe it. I had loads of fun and would do it again in a heartbeat. Maybe I will perfect the technique of staying on the tube so I don't fall off.
I also observed an optometrist while I was in Utah. Dr. Pyne the optometrist that Bethany works for was kind enough to let me follow her around for a few days. I learned a ton and am really excited to go to optometry school now. I am still working on my applications. That was one of the things I wanted to get done during the summer but didn't. Oh well. I hope to have them sent in by the beginning of October. I am taking the OAT on Dec 23rd so wish me luck everyone.
School this semester is pretty tough so far. I am taking Organic Chemistry, General Biology, Calculus, Creative Writing, and Ceramics. O Chem isn't too bad mostly because the professor rocks. She is really awesome. Biology isnt too bad so far but I will let you know on Monday after my first test what I really think about it. Calculus is just plain hard. I think I am getting it but we will see for sure after the test next Friday. Creative writing is kind of hard. I have always hated writing but I came up with an idea for a short story and did a pretty good job of writing it if I do say so myself. Again we shall see once I get it back as to how well I really did. Ceramics I took for fun because all of the other classes I was taking were so gosh darn hard. So watch out some of you may be getting a Julia original for Christmas.
I have asked Bethany to send me some pics of me at Lava so as soon as I get those I will post them. And I will take some pics of my masterpieces as soon as they are finished.

Here it Comes
Well I have been here in Virginia for over a year now and hope to only be here for one more year. Don't get me wrong I love it here I am just anxious to move on with my life and get on with my schooling and stuff like that. I am starting to get everything together for my optometry school applications. Each school needs different things and wants things submitted in different ways it is driving me crazy! I am applying to 4 schools for sure but maybe up to 14 schools. It all depends on the school requirements. The ones I am definitely applying to are in Boston, Chicago, Indiana and Oregon.

I have also started studying for the OAT (Optometry Admissions Test). That seems daunting to me right now. I haven't taken one of the classes yet that I need for this test so the studying is a little bit difficult. I am starting that class this fall and am taking the test around Christmas time. The OAT consists of 195 questions with time limits in each section. So wish me luck with it!
So if you read Elizabeths blog you know that I won 2nd place for my yummy chocolate mint chip cookies at the county fair. I am really happy about that. I honestly didn't think I would place at all. Who knew?

I am going to Utah next week for vacation. I am so excited. I have been wanting to go all summer and work was going to be letting up so I figured it was a perfect time to go. So I bought my ticket and made arrangements for time off and my boss ok'd it and everything. Then we had an employee quit a couple of days later so it turns out this is a bad time for me to go but I already bought my ticket so there is nothing they can do about it. I am excited to see everyone out there especially my new nephew Tyler!

I will start school a week after I get home from Utah. I am taking Organic Chemistry, Calculus, General Biology and an English class. Sounds like fun doesn't it? Oh yeah! I am thinking about taking an EMT class so I can get my Virginia and National certifications but it would basically be just a review of the EMT class I took in Utah so I'm not sure I want to waste my time with it. I will be glad to listen to anybodys opinions about this so I can get an idea as to what to do. Thanks!

All these pics are obviously of Xavier and Meredith. They are cuter than I am so hence the pics of them and not me. Meredith is officially in her terrible twos and is quite a handful. She gets into EVERYTHING! I swear I have to hunt down stuff in my room everyday because she moved it or was playing with it or was about to open it and spill it all over so Elizabeth or Spencer had to move it to a safe place. You should see my room. I have to have most of my possesions on top of high places so she can't get at them. And Xavier is just getting to the smiling phase. He is sooooooo cute. He just coos and smiles at you and then spits up all over you. And his cheeks. Oh! You just want to squeeze them all the time.

Summer is Here! UGH!
Well summer has officially arrived here in Virginia. I thought last year was bad well that was nothing compared to what the weather has been like so far this year. Yesterday it was 101 with like 100% humidity. Luckily I had to work in an airconditioned hospital. Oh darn.
I am in the midst of my second semester of summer classes. I finished my retake of my spanish 2 class that I failed in the spring. I got an A- the second time around! What a difference a good teacher makes. Right now i am taking my last 2 spanish classes. Yes at the same time. It is very intense but it will be over in 3 weeks and then I never have to take another spanish or foreign language class ever again!
I drove up last Thursday for Greg and Le Annas (sorry if I butchered the spelling) wedding. It was a nice drive even though I was by myself and had to do it all by myself. Also I had a momentary panic that I had left my credit card at one of the gas stations but I found it once I got to RI. It took me about 10 hours to get up to RI. I listened to The Divinci Code on CD. That really helped pass the time. It is a great book. It was really great to see everyone. I wish everyone could have been there. But some people had more important things to do you know like go on cruises or work. Lame excuses if you ask me. Well any way. The wedding was beautiful. I don't think I have anything else to say it was just very beautiful. I am glad that LeAnna is now a part of the crazy Kohl family. I wish them good luck (she will need it living with Greg) and much happiness.
I wish I had pictures but I don't so I guess I can't post any. I am having so much fun with Meredith and Xavier. I get to be the cool aunt that spoils them rotten and then lets the parents deal with the consequences. He he he! Aren't I evil? They are seriously so cute and a lot of fun. Meredith is a handful like Elizabeth said in her blog. You have to watch her like a hawk otherwise she gets into trouble. But she is so cute so you have a hard time being mad at her for very long. And Xavier I could hold all day if I get the chance.
Well recently I was praying that I could somehow get more hours at work because my finances are kind of tight right now and well last week I guess my prayers were answered although I didn't really want them to be answered this way. A coworker of mine got fired and I was asked to fill in for her until they hired someone else. I guess God works in mysterious ways. So I went from working about 16 hours a week to about 40 or so a week. And I'm in school for 5 hours a day too so my life is pretty crazy right now. I may need a vacation after this is all over.
I am starting to work on my applications to optometry school and studying for the OAT. Pray that it all goes well for me. I am hoping to get into the one in Boston. But I am applying to 6 different schools and would be thrilled to get into any of them. I won't know for a while if I get in to any of them. I will post again once they are all in so we can start the acceptance watch. Well class is about to start I better get going. Hope everyone is well. Miss you all.

Remote Area Medical
I had a great time on my trip this past weekend. We arrived around 8 pm Friday night and almost immediately hit the sack. We had to get up dark and early the next day at 5 am. We had to be at the school at 6 am to start seeing patients. These people hadn't been seen by a doctor in probably years. Some desperately needed glasses but couldn't afford them. A lot also needed dental work. There were a bunch of dentists and dental assistants that volunteered their time to help all these people. There were also some doctors and some optometrists that helped out.
I got to work the machine that measures the curvature of the eye. It was way cool. Bethany gets to use that machine everyday at her job. I am so jealous. Then I got to see the other side of vision care. Remote Area Medical has a lens grinding van that makes the glasses right there. I got to help with that. I must have made about 50 pairs of glasses.
I should have pictures soon. I wasnt able to take any pics but some other people did take some so as soon as I get them I will post the pics.
Everything else is good. School is almost over. I am excited for summer vacation.

Life
So yeah I know I haven't posted in forever. I'm sorry. It's basically been the same old same old for me. School and work keeping me busy. I'm still failing spanish. I'm doing ok in my other classes. Finals are coming up very soon. They shouldnt be too bad. I will just be glad when this semester is done. But then I am taking 2 classes this May so school won't be done for the summer until June.
I am going on a trip this weekend to a rural part of Tennessee to volunteer at a big medical clinic type thing. They have them a few times a year in different places to help out with the rural community to provide them with health care. We go and help out where ever we can. Hopefully I will have pictures of it and will post those and the update of the trip when I get back.
Well I have a test I have to take soon and a paper to write that is due tomorrow. Yeah I know I should have done it weeks ago yes I am a procrastinator.

Tahras Wedding
My trip to Utah was very good. I really needed that vacation. Tahras wedding was also very nice. Going to the temple with her was a wonderful experience. I was so happy for her and proud of her for ordering her life so she could get married in the temple.
I know some of you may ask me when I am going to get married and how did I feel about her getting married before me. Here are the answers.
I am ok. Seriously. I love Tahra so I am very happy for her and I can't let the fact that I'm not married get in the way of my happiness for her. I am not dating anyone right now so who knows when I will get married. I am trying to focus on finishing school and be very active in church right now and what ever happens happens.
So Utah was fun. I hung out with some friends of mine and had a lot of fun with Bethany and Ryan. Thank you to them for letting me stay at their house. I wish I could have spent more time there. I didn't think I missed Utah until I went back there. Now I am kind of homesick. I definitely don't miss my job there just my friends.
I am back at school and back at work. Both keeping me very busy again this semester. Again having struggles with spanish class. I have a different teacher this time around so maybe that will help me. I am hopefully getting every Sunday off from work now. I do have to work this Sunday of course it's only Super Bowl Sunday! So I am hoping that it will be very slow at work so I can sit and watch the game at work.
GO PATS!!!!!!
I will try to update more often but honestly I am pretty much a boring person and just have the same routine every day so there isn't much to report that's new. Genetics class is almost over so I should finish this up and pay attention to the end.

SCHOOL'S OUT!!!!
School is out and I am loving this time off I am having right now. Finals were rough but they are done and I have gotten a couple of my grades in so far. Will post again when I get them all. Work is going great. Winter is the busy time around here. Lots of people coming down with stuff and think they need to go to the ER. Oh well it keeps me employed so that's a good thing I guess. I really do love my job. I know I said that with my last job but this time I really mean it.
Now that school is done I get to spend some more time at home. I love spending time with Elizabeth and Meredith. We finally ate the chicken that Elizabeth wrote about in her blog. I was skeptical just because I watch the chickens running around in the yard everyday and I see the looks in their eyes when you feed them and stuff like that. But honestly once you get over that guess what it tastes like chicken!!!!
Really good chicken as a matter of fact. Elizabeth fried it in this really yummy breading and it tasted fabulous. The best fried chicken I have ever had.
I am looking forward to having a vacation and seeing some of you out in Utah. For those I don't see in Utah I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Julia's Kinda Boring Life
I know it's been a long time since I blogged but honestly not much has been going on in my life. School is almost over so that's good but that also means final are coming up. EEEEEEEK!!!!
I am very nervous for finals this year. Especially in spanish. We have to remember everything we learned this whole semester and do a pronunciation test and an oral report in from of the class. I am so nervous. I also have a big project due in Cell Biology. My teacher assigned us each a different scientific article to read and do a presentation on. I have read mine so many times and have yet to comprehend anything its talking about. I guess I should do some research and talk to my professor. Chemistry is going very well for me. And physics isn't too bad either.
I will be done with my finals on the 12th so I will be able to breathe much easier after that. I will be in Utah for Tahras wedding from dec 28th to Jan 9th. I can't wait to see all of you that will be out there for that happy event.
Speaking of Tahras wedding most of you know that I was asked to be a bridesmaid which I am very excited about. Tahra gave us kind of free reign when picking out our dresses for the event. We went through so many different options. Everytime we thought we got one picked out there was something wrong. It took about aminth to finally pick out a dress that would work for all of of us. So I measured myself and got the dress that fit my measurements. I got the dress in the mail about a week ago and guess what???!!!! IT DOESN'T FIT!!!!! Not even close to the measurements on the stupid size chart. It was about 6 inches too big. There was no way that having the dress altered would work because it would look ridiculous. I was furious. So I called the company and they had me send the dress back so they could fix the problem. I really hope they do fix it because otherwise I won't be able to be in the wedding and I want to be there for Tahra.
So that's the drama in my life. Not much (other than the dress issue). I hope everyone is having a great week and hope to read some updated blogs soon. (sorry no pics Im doing this from work and don't have my camera with me.)

CHICKENS!!!!
So this weekend Spencer and Elizabeth are up in New England on a recruiting trip for the school and I get the responsibility to take care of their chickens. So far so good. They are all still alive and all still in their box but that may change because they are starting to fly a little bit and are almost getting out. They are really cool looking. I can tell they are going to be loud. So maybe I won't feel so guillty eating them if I think they are annnoying. I definitely won't be able to be there when they kill them. They are getting big and they are getting their feathers in on their wings.
Well I must go back to the Red Sox. They are winning game 3 but I don't want to jinx anything. So I'm not gonna post this till after the game. Ok they won so I am posting this. Hope you guys like the pics of the chickens. Am gonna try to post some videos as well but dial-up is too slow to do that so I will try to do it at school or something

GO SOX!!!!!
Sorry for not updating in a while. I have been busy. And I don't have my camera with me at school here so there wont be any pics on this post. Sorry again.
First I must say GO SOX!!!! I have to work almost every night that the series is playing. I am kinda mad about that but we do have a TV in the lobby right outside the lab so if I sit at the front desk and turn my head just right and pray that nobody needs to get stuck I can watch most of the game.
I am a very tired person these last few weeks and this week. The games aren't getting over till about 1 am and then it takes me a little while to fall asleep. So needless to say I have been very sleepy for my 8am class every morning. (That's if I go at all) ;)
School is going ok. I need to study more. If anyone has any great study tips and wants to share them please do. Especially tips on how to study spanish. I have heard that spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn. Whoever said that is a dirty rotten liar. It is so hard. I think I'm doing ok then the teacher asks me a question and I answer it totally wrong. And on the tests I think I do ok and then I get my grade back and its a C. UGH!!!!
My other classes are going fine. Have a physics test tomorrow and need to be studying for that. (Oh and I lost all respect for my physics teacher because he thinks that me being a sox fan is stupid because I'm not from Boston.) He's a redskins fan and he doesn't live in Washington DC. Hypocrite. Other than that he's a good guy.
Spencer and Elizabeth are going up to New England for like 6 days so my responsibility on the farm is to feed the chickens and make sure they don't die. I'm a little worried.

Exciting Happenings at the Hospital
So on Monday I was working my usual shift and we were kind of busy. (Nothing unusual for a Monday) But that day there was a code blue called in the ER (A code blue means someones heart has stopped) And my job as a phlebotomist is to go to wherever the code blue is called and wait there and see if they need my services. They did. I had to draw blood on basically a dead person. (They did end up reviving her)
So that was exciting but my night was not over yet. I got orders to go up to the nursery and draw blood on a brand new baby. I have never drawn blood on a baby. I have seen it done a few times and its basically the same as an adult except much much smaller. I used a tiny needle and stuck it in his tiny arm and actually got blood. I was shocked. I figured my first time I was going to miss.
I work again tonight and I hope we have a quieter night but a little excitement now and then is a good thing.
School is going good. I took my first tests last week and did good on most of them. Spanish is still an issue for me. If anyone knows a good way to study for it please help me out.

School and Work in Virginia
Well I have officially been at school for 2 full weeks now and at work for 3. I finally had a breather and had time to write an update. I am actually at Jared's house right now. Jared and I went to a RedSox game in Baltimore (for those of you that follow them you know how it went tonight, not pretty). But we had fun anyway.
Ok so back to school and work... So far I love my job! Never thought you would hear me say that huh? ;) I am busy enough to not be bored but slow enough to not be driven crazy. I love the work I do. I go around the hospital when someone calls and draw different patients blood for tests that need to be run. I feel like I actually am doing some good here.
School is going very well. I think I will be ok in my chemistry class and maybe my physics class (Ian I may be asking for some help with that class) It's my spanish and cell biology class that I am worried about. The school itself is really good. It's a great atmosphere to be in and the teachers are all incredible. I have my first tests this week so I guess we will see how those go. Hopefully will have a positive update next week once I get my scores.
Church is going well. Haven't started teaching my temple prep class yet. They still need to get a list of who needs to go to the class. So will hopefully start teaching it within the next couple of weeks. There was a co-instructer called last week so I guess we will taking turns teaching it. That should be good. I am also taking an institute class on how to be a better teacher of the scriptures. It is a fabulous class.
My personal life is good. Am making friends at the school and at church. Life is good in general. Better than it has been in a while. I am starting to really see why I came here to Virginia. It was definitely a great thing for me am so glad I made that decision. As always hope everything is going great for you all. And keep in touch.

What a Week!!!!!
So I started my new job this past week. What an adventure it has been. The first few days are just orientation and training. Kinda boring. Then the las couple days of work have been a very rushed training of the computer systems they have and procedures because I am working by myself Monday night. They said they normally don't let someone loose this fast but they are short staffed so they need me on my own. It is going good though. The phlebotomy is coming back to me. I have used big needles for the past 2 years and these small ones kinda scare me. But I think I will get the hang of it soon. It's a small hospital only about 30 beds and a small emergency room but the lab keeps pretty steady.
School also started this week. I am taking Chemistry, Cell Biology, Physics, Spanish, Scuba Diving and an institute class. I think I will be fine with all the science classes but the spanish one I am terrified of! I also have a calling in the student ward I am in. I am the Temple Prep teacher. So the rest of this year should be very busy for me.
It is hotter than hades here in Virginia. I do have ac at work but not in any of my classes or at home. So the 3 days a week I am at work I will probably be busy but will at least be cool.

Fun with Meredith
I was baby-sitting Meredith yesterday and snapped some pictures of her. It has been sooooooooo hot here that she has been running around in just a diaper. ( I wish I could do that!) We had fun reading books and eating rice. Don't ever feed a baby rice so messy and sticky. But we got through it after about 10 baby wipes, a wash cloth and a mop. She found one of my fake roses and put it in her mouth. SO CUTE! Looked like she was getting ready to dance the tango.
She does this cute thing when you ask her where something is like her kitty. (Her new favorite stuffed animal.) I caught a picture of her doing it. We are teaching her where stuff is like her nose, ears, hair, belly, and other parts. When you ask her where her nose is she sticks her finger up it. I know we shouldn't encourage it but it's so cute.
Elizabeth and I have fun spending the day with Meredith. Since I don't have a job yet I have a lot of free time on my hands. I try to help out when I can. Meredith is just such a good baby that she is a joy to be around.

Snake in the Grass
So a few weeks ago I was looking out the window and Spencer yells at me to come outside quickly. So I run out the kitchen door and this is what I see in the backyard... A freaking SNAKE!!!! It was just a black snake they aren't poisonous but this one was very angry. So we thought we would see what Miss Sophie would do with a snake. It was cool to watch. She didn't hurt it just played with it a bit and then got bored. I haven't seen it since so maybe it really didn't like the cat. I will keep you all updated on any snake sightings!

INSOMNIA
Well, as you can tell by the title I am having trouble sleeping and when that happens I go online and surf the web. I noticed that 3 of us Kohl's have blogs now (4 if you count Ian & Susan's 1 post blog!) I wanted to make it 5. So here it goes. I don't know where the cord for my camera is either since I now live with a 15 month old. Carrie I may not have one of my own yet but I know exactly how it goes. So this post wont have any pics. Sorry.
I have been here in VA for almost 2 months now. And for all those wondering no I don't have a job yet. So if anyone wants to help out and send me some money I would love you forever! I am just kidding. I am doing great. I have had a very promising interview at the hospital and am waiting to hear back from them. I would be working as a phlebotomist in the lab and it would be the perfect schedule for school. So everyone please pray that I get this.
So now you ask what has Julia been doing for the last 2 months if she hasn't been working. Well here is the answer you desparately are seeking. NOTHING!!!!! I am getting so bored. I do have a VERY cute niece to play with all day though so she makes life a little interesting. Meredith is a little bundle of energy and she gets into everything! But she is so darnd cute that I forgive her for any mess she makes. I have been trying to help Spencer and Elizabeth get there house all finished. They still have painting and some other stuff like that to do but their cute little house is almost finished.
Oh wait. I forgot to tell you that I am living with Spencer and his lovely little family. They have been awesome! Putting up with me is hard work. (Ian & Susan can attest to that) I decided that for at least this semester I am going to be staying here so I can save some money and pay off some bills and also focus more on school since I wont have to be working as much.
So hopefully in a few days I will find the cord and take some pics of the house and Meredith to post. And to all of you who don't have a blog yet........ COME ON!!!!! Everybody's doing it!
